Healthy Fascia: Tip #1 – Weight

If you want to live a healthy, active and pain-free life it's important to understand the role of fascia on the body and what to do about it.

Fascia is the most prevalent tissue in the body and plays a large role in your health, well-being and mobility. It serves several functions including producing movement, communicating with your nervous system and protecting your internal organs.

As Fascial Stretch Specialists & Fitness Professionals, we often get asked the same questions:

  • How does nutrition affect the fascia and what should I eat?

  • What can I do on my own to make progress?

  • What can I do at home?

Over the next several weeks we’re going to address these diet and lifestyle factors that can help keep your fascia healthy.

Our first tip is to encourage you to maintain a healthy weight and body fat percentage.

Since weight doesn’t always give you the whole picture (it fluctuates depending on your hydration level and lean muscle mass), maintaining a lean body composition is just as important, if not more.

Everybody knows that obtaining a healthy weight and muscle-to-fat ratio is important for health and longevity. What you might not realize is body fat can also affect the quality of your fascia and your mobility.

Effects of excess weight:

  1. It puts pressure on your bones, joints, tendons, ligaments & fascia. It can therefore reduce your mobility leading to aches and pains, poor posture and inefficient movement.

  2. It has an impact on on your fat cells. Since fat cells are part of the structure of fascia, gaining too much weight can store extra fat. The result is inflammation and hormonal imbalances that not only affect your metabolism and overall function, but also the quality and fluidity of your fascia.

Bottom line: If you take care of your body and maintain a healthy weight, you will likely reduce your chances of getting chronic diseases while maintaining the freedom to move, feel and perform way better, even as you age.

Weight loss can be tricky. We encourage you to consider your lifestyle beyond just nutrition and exercise. Other factors that make it impossible to lose weight are inadequate sleep, chronic stress and dehydration.
