What Are Your Coaching Needs?
People typically fall into one of these four categories based on their motivation and skill:
High-motivation, high-skill
High-motivation, low-skill
Low-motivation, high-skill
Low-motivation, low-skill
We as coaches need to respect where people are coming from. Depending on which box you relate to, it would change how we approach our coaching style as trainers.
This might mean more feedback for some and more encouragement for others.
Some people like to be more involved in the process, while others are more interested in following the plan.
Some people need to be pushed and others need to go at their own pace.
Some people want podcast or book recommendations to learn more and others simply aren’t interested in exercise beyond their session.
Having a general understanding of where you are is helpful for both client and coach to ensure you’re getting what you need the most. Depending on the circumstances of your life, where you are along the motivation-skill spectrum might change or fluctuate.
Whatever category you find yourself in, it’s all good. Becoming aware of strengths and opportunities empowers us to take action. If we’re able to acknowledge our motivation level or abilities, then we’ll be in a better position to self-regulate and increase our chances of success.
